Okay, so today I tried out this thing called “shamble” in golf. I heard about it from a friend who’s way better at golf than I am, and he said it’s a fun way to play with a group. I thought, “Why not give it a shot?” So, I rounded up a couple of buddies, and we headed to the local course.

First off, let me tell you, none of us are pros. We’re just your average weekend golfers who enjoy hitting the ball around and having a good laugh. So, we got to the first tee, and we all teed off as usual. That’s how a shamble starts – everyone hits their own drive.
Next, we had to pick the best drive out of the group. This was a bit of a debate, of course. My drive went straight down the middle but wasn’t super long. One friend sliced his into the trees, and the other topped his, which only went about 50 yards. We decided to go with my drive because, you know, it was actually on the fairway.
- Tee Off: Everyone hits their drive from the tee box.
- Select Best Drive: The group chooses the best drive among them.
- Play Own Ball: From the spot of the best drive, everyone plays their own ball until it’s in the hole.
From there, things got interesting. Each of us played our own ball from where my drive landed. It felt a bit weird hitting from the same spot, but it was also kind of cool. My second shot wasn’t great – pulled it a little left. My friends both hit decent shots, though, so there was a little competition brewing.
We kept playing our own balls, counting our own strokes, until we all holed out. This part was just like regular golf. We had some good shots, some bad shots, and a lot of laughs along the way. It was fun to see how we all did starting from the same advantage point.
We played a few more holes like this, and honestly, it was a blast. The shamble format really adds a different dynamic to the game. It’s less pressure since you get to start from the best drive, but you still get to play your own game. Plus, it makes for some good-natured ribbing when someone’s drive gets picked (or doesn’t).

What I Learned
Playing a shamble is definitely something I’ll do again. It’s a great way to play with friends of different skill levels. It takes some of the pressure off the not-so-great players, while still letting the better players shine. It makes the game a little easier, a little more fun, and a lot more social. If you’re looking for a way to mix up your usual golf round, give it a try. I think you’ll enjoy it.
And at the end, we were so tired and hungry, so we went to a restaurant to have the dinner. We shared the experience to each other during having the meal, it was really a good day!
