Okay, so I’ve been seeing all this stuff online about average PGA Tour swing speeds, and I got curious. I mean, how fast do those guys really swing? I’m no pro, but I like to think I can hit the ball a decent way. So, I decided to do a little experiment of my own.
First, I grabbed my driver and headed to the local driving range. They’ve got this fancy launch monitor thingy that tells you all sorts of stats about your swing. I figured that’s the best way to get an accurate reading.
I warmed up a bit, just like I usually do before a round. A few stretches, some practice swings, you know the drill. Then, I stepped up to the tee and let it rip.
Now, I’m not gonna lie, I was a little nervous. I wanted to see how I stacked up against the pros, even though I knew I probably wouldn’t be anywhere close. I took a deep breath and swung as hard as I could.
The monitor spat out a number: 105 mph. Not bad, I thought. I hit a few more balls, trying to really go after it. My swing speed hovered around the same number, maybe a little higher on a couple of swings.
- First try: 105 mph
- Second try: 107 mph
- Third try: 103 mph
- Fourth try: 106 mph
- Fifth try: 105 mph
After hitting about a dozen balls, I checked the average. It came out to be around 105.2 mph. To be honest, I was pretty happy with that. I mean, it’s not PGA Tour level, but it’s respectable.
Then I remembered reading somewhere that the average PGA Tour swing speed is around 113 mph. That’s a big difference! Those guys are really swinging it fast. It just goes to show how much power and athleticism those players have.
So, what did I learn from all this? Well, first of all, I learned that I’m not as far off from the pros as I thought, at least in terms of swing speed. But more importantly, I realized that there’s a whole lot more to golf than just how fast you swing. There’s accuracy, consistency, short game, mental game, and so much more. It was a fun little experiment, and it definitely gave me a new appreciation for the skill of professional golfers.
Maybe one day I will reach the level of the average PGA Tour pro, but for now, I am pretty happy that I can hit the ball as far as I can currently.
I would suggest you give it a go yourselves if you are curious, it is actually quite fun to do in my experience.
