Okay, so, let me tell you about this whole Dusty May thing. I’ve been following this guy’s career for a while now, and man, it’s been a wild ride.
It all started when I first heard about him taking over as the head coach at Florida Atlantic University back in 2018. Honestly, I didn’t know much about him then, but I was curious to see what he could do with the program. Fast forward to 2023, and BAM! He takes the Owls to the NCAA Final Four. I mean, who saw that coming? That’s when I really started paying attention.
The Rise
I dug into his record at FAU. In six seasons, the guy racked up 126 wins. That’s a lot of wins! And in the 2022-2023 season, they went 35-4, which is just insane. They even won the Conference USA Championship. Clearly, this Dusty May guy knows what he’s doing.
The Move to Michigan
Then, the big news dropped. Dusty May was leaving FAU to become the head coach at the University of Michigan. This was huge! I was pumped to see what he could do with a program like Michigan. I started watching the Wolverines more closely. Their record was pretty good, 13-3, and they were undefeated in the Big Ten, ranked number 20 in the AP Poll. Not too shabby.
Witnessing the Magic
I remember watching a game where Michigan was playing Purdue Fort Wayne. They absolutely crushed them, 89-58. Five of Michigan’s players scored in double digits. It was a total team effort. And there was this one close game, tied with 16 seconds left. I watched Dusty May call a timeout and draw up a play in the huddle. It was like watching a master at work. They executed the play perfectly and won the game. It was clear that he had the team’s trust and respect.
Dusty’s Coaching Style
What really stood out to me was his players. I remember hearing him talk about one player. I don’t recall the exact words, but it was something about how he dribbles, how he shoots, and how he creates space. Dusty emphasized his ability to create his own shots. He’s been working on it extensively the last couple of weeks. Then, there’s another guy, a unique talent, six foot ten, a lefty, and incredibly skilled.
It was clear to me that Dusty May really knows how to identify and develop talent. The way he talked about his players, you could tell he genuinely cared about them and was invested in their success.
The Dusty May Era Begins
Then there was the first game of the season against Cleveland State. Michigan dominated from start to finish. It was the perfect start to the Dusty May era. I was totally hooked.
- 126 wins at FAU in six seasons – That’s an average of 21 wins per season!
- Conference USA Championship – Proof that he can build a winning culture.
- 35-4 record in 2022-2023 – Just mind-blowing.
- NCAA Final Four appearance in 2023 – The moment he really put himself on the map.
- Took over as head coach at Michigan – A major step up, and he’s already making an impact.
So yeah, that’s my experience following Dusty May so far. It’s been exciting to watch his journey, and I can’t wait to see what he does next at Michigan. This guy’s the real deal, and I’m telling you, he’s going to do big things.
It seems that he has become the winningest head coach in Florida Atlantic Owls basketball history. After he left FAU, John Jakus was hired as the new head coach in March 2024.
Anyway, I just wanted to share my experience. Hope you enjoyed it!
