Hey everyone, it’s your boy back again with another project. Today, I wanted to mess around with something a bit different: golf. Specifically, I wanted to see what the average PGA swing speed is and if I could get anywhere near it. Now, I’m no pro golfer, not even close, but I do enjoy hitting the range from time to time.
So, first things first, I needed to figure out the average. A quick search told me that the average PGA Tour player swings at around 113 miles per hour. Meanwhile, I found some guys saying that the average golfer like me is closer to 95. Jeez, that’s a big difference!
Next, I needed a way to measure my own swing speed. I don’t have any fancy equipment, so I grabbed my phone and found a radar speed gun app. It’s probably not super accurate, but it should give me a ballpark figure. I’m not going to waste money to rent a Trackman or buy a real Flightscope.
I headed down to the local driving range and warmed up a bit. I tried to imagine myself to be a professional player and tried to do the best warm up. After that, I teed up a few balls and started taking some swings, trying my best to get good readings on the app. I swung as hard as I could, trying to channel my inner Tiger Woods.
- First few swings were pretty rough. The app was giving me readings in the low 80s. I’m an adult and I could even hit 90! I felt embarrassed.
- After a few more tries, I started to get into a rhythm. I focused on my technique, trying to get a good rotation and follow-through.
- Then a best reading showed up in my phone, 92 mph! I thought I made it! But, I felt my waist was going to be broken. I decided to take a rest.
After taking like 100 swings, my average was somewhere in the high 80s to low 90s. Definitely not PGA level, but hey, I’m not a pro, and I was using a phone app, don’t forget it.
My takeaway from this little experiment? PGA players are seriously strong and skilled. There’s a reason they’re the best in the world. I might not be able to hit it like them, but it was fun to try and see how I measured up. Maybe with some actual lessons and better equipment, I could break 100 mph. Who knows? If I really spent time practicing, I believed I could break 100 mph and even get close to the average of 113 mph, after all, it is just a number.
Anyway, that’s all for today’s adventure. Let me know in the comments what your swing speed is, and if you have any tips for getting more power. Until next time, keep swinging!
