Okay, so, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about this whole “greatest golfer to never win a major” thing. It’s a real head-scratcher, you know? There are just so many darn good players out there who’ve come close, but just haven’t quite clinched one of those big titles.
So I did a little digging. First, I started by just trying to remember all the names that usually pop up in these kinds of conversations. You always hear about Colin Montgomerie, right? That guy was always in the mix.
Then I figured I’d check out some stats. I mean, who’s played in the most tournaments without a win? Turns out, a guy named Brett Quigley is way up there. Played in, like, over 400 events without a win! Can you imagine? He was in the top 25 in a good chunk of those, even finished second five times. That’s gotta be rough, always the bridesmaid, never the bride, as they say.
Then there’s the other side
On the flip side, you’ve got your legends, the guys who’ve won everything. Jack Nicklaus, obviously. The Golden Bear. 18 major championships. That’s just insane. Won each of the four majors at least three times. He’s definitely in the conversation for the best ever, no doubt about it.
- I looked up some other winners, too. Keegan Bradley, won the PGA Championship in his first try! That’s wild. Apparently, there have been five other guys who did that, too.
- And when you think about total wins, Jack Nicklaus is just in a league of his own. 73 PGA Tour wins, 10 Champions Tour wins. It’s mind-boggling.
So, I guess what I’m saying is, it’s a tough question. There are lots of ways to look at it. Longevity, consistency, and those “almost” moments all play a part. But when you compare them to guys like Jack, it’s hard to say who’s the “greatest” to never win a major. It depends on what you value, I suppose. But it sure is fun to think about!
