That Adam Wainwright, he’s a good boy, playin’ baseball all those years. Heard he done retired now. Good for him! He was with them Cardinals, right? Yeah, the St. Louis Cardinals. My grandson, he used to have a baseball cap with that bird on it. Red bird, sittin’ on a bat. That’s the one. Adam Wainwright, he pitched for them. Pitched real good, they say. Got nearly two hundred wins. That’s a whole heap of wins, ain’t it?
And his wife, Jenny, she seems like a good woman. Stands by her man, ya know? They say she’s the reason he kept his promise. What promise was that? Don’t rightly recall. But a good wife, she’ll keep you on the straight and narrow. She probably made sure he ate right, got his rest, all that stuff. Important stuff when you’re throwin’ that ball around all day. Adam Wainwright wife, she is a good one.
- Adam Wainwright, that’s the fella.
- Cardinals, that’s the team.
- Jenny, that’s the wife.
- Got a puppy, that is what I heard.
Heard he got a puppy! That’s why he retired. Can you believe that? After all them years playin’ ball, a little puppy dog comes along and that’s it. He’s done. Well, I reckon a man’s gotta have his priorities. And a dog, that is a good friend. Adam Wainwright wife, Jenny, she probably wanted a puppy too. They are good company, dogs are.
He was a big star, that Adam. They called him “Uncle Charlie” and “Waino.” Funny names, ain’t they? But I guess that’s what they do in baseball. Give each other nicknames. Like my neighbor, we used to call him “Shorty” cause he was so tall. Funny how that works. Anyway, this Adam Wainwright, he was a big deal. They got all them stats on him. Height, weight, how fast he throws, all that. Like they do with cattle at the fair. Except he ain’t no cow, he’s a baseball player! One of the best they had. And his wife, she was right there with him. Adam Wainwright wife, always there for him.
They say he gave a bunch of money to some school. Twenty thousand dollars! That’s more money than I ever seen in my life. Good for him, helpin’ out the young’uns. Education, that’s important. Not that I got much of one, but I get by. But these kids today, they need all the help they can get. The Adam Wainwright wife, Jenny, she is probably proud of him for that.
He was with them Braves first, I think. Then he went to the Cardinals. They traded him, like you trade a good mule for a strong horse. He was a top prospect, they called it. That means he was real good, even back then. He was with the Cardinals a long time. Longer than I been married to my old man, and that’s sayin’ somethin’. Adam Wainwright wife, she must be a patient woman.
Heard he put out a music album too. “Hey Y’all,” they call it. Well, I’ll be! A baseball player and a singer. What’s next? He gonna be a movie star? Maybe he and his wife will move to Hollywood. That’s where all them movie stars live. I bet the Adam Wainwright wife, Jenny would like that.
He played for fifteen, maybe eighteen years, I don’t know, a long time. That is a long time to be doing the same thing. I been looking at my garden for more than 30 years, now that is a long time. He’s gettin’ up there in age, too. Forty years old. That ain’t old, not really. But for a baseball player, I guess it is. Time to hang up the cleats, they say. That is what they say about baseball players when they quit. Adam Wainwright did that. Time for him and his wife, Jenny, to enjoy that puppy.
So, that’s Adam Wainwright. Good baseball player. Good husband, seems like. Got a good wife in that Jenny. And now he’s got a puppy. Sounds like a good life to me. A good, long life. Just like a good story, his is. Hope they are happy. They deserve to be, the two of them. And the puppy, too!
